9/12/2006 Giant tent to be built in Astana
Kazakhstan has unveiled a new architectural project for its capital Astana - a giant transparent tent that will contain an indoor city.

The 150m-high (500ft) dome, designed by UK architect Norman Foster, will be built in just over a year. The tent is being made from special material that absorbs sunlight to create the effect of summer inside. Astana lies in the very heart of the Central Asian steppe.

7/12/2006 Head of State Nursultan Nazarbaev took part in the presentation of Astana ’ s new unique objects, which was held in the Peace and Accord Palace.
The President viewed three new large-scale projects, which include trade entertainment center Khan Shatyry, complex “ Astana covered city ” and skiing training base in Borovoe.

Projects in Astana "Khan Shatyr", "Indoor-city" and "Borovoye" were presented in the capital The construction boom is continuing the capital of Kazakhstan. Thus last week the presanttion of three new projects took place in Astana. These included the tradingand entertaining center " Khan Shatyr" ("Khan's tent"). The presentation was carried out by the Turkish company Sembol Insaat.

The Khan Shatyry entertainment centre in Astana will become a dramatic civic focal point for the capital of Kazakhstan, the soaring structure, at the northern end of the new city axis, rises from a 200m elliptical base to form the highest peak on the skyline of Astana.

The Khan Shatyry entertainment centre in Astana will become a dramatic civic focal point for the capital of Kazakhstan, the soaring structure, at the northern end of the new city axis, rises from a 200m elliptical base to form the highest peak on the skyline of Astana.

The 100,000sqm centre’s unique concept - to provide a sheltered environment embracing an urban-scale internal park, shopping and entertainment venue - was developed in response to the harsh climate of extreme weather in both winter and summer. The building will become a lively public space and an unprecedented amenity for the people of Astana which can be used throughout the year.

Held by a mast, the vast tent-like cable net structure is clad in ETFE, a material that allows light to wash the interior spaces while sheltering them from extreme weather conditions.
